The University of California respects the privacy of individuals. All tools deployed by the Secure UCSB Cybersecurity Investment Initiative must be in compliance with UCSB privacy policies and guidelines, including the UC Statement of Privacy

UCSB is aware of concerns surrounding the introduction of software that can potentially track user activity and location. Enrolling a UCSB owned device to the needed cybersecurity tools does not equate to providing access to your local (personal or UCSB related) files, emails, browsing history, or any other standard, activity-related information. The tools focus on collecting relevant information to determine if the devices are vulnerable to cyber threats.

It is important that members of the campus community understand that, though location tracking will be enabled, it will not be turned on unless:

  1. The device is reported as lost or stolen by the user, and
  2. The user of the device is notified that location tracking will be turned on.

Location tracking will only be enabled to assist in recovering lost devices, or to determine if a device is unrecoverable, at which point it can be remotely reset, deleting and safeguarding sensitive data.

Users are already required to comply with the UCSB and UC Systemwide IT policies and guidelines, which can be found on the UC Systemwide IT Policies and Guidelines website. Devices must be used in a manner that protects the organization’s information assets, ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
